My Policy on ChatGPT-Generated Content

I plan to use ChatGPT to generate content at NoLongerSet.com. But I plan to do it with full transparency. Here is my pledge to you, dear reader.

My Policy on ChatGPT-Generated Content
  1. ATTRIBUTION: I will always acknowledge my use of ChatGPT
  2. VERACITY: I will only publish ChatGPT content that I verify as correct
  3. ACCESSIBILITY: I favor plain text over screenshots

Attribution

I will ALWAYS acknowledge my use of ChatGPT.

Moving forward, these acknowledgements will appear in a dedicated Acknowledgements section at the bottom of any article involving ChatGPT.  Only those acknowledgements related to the current article will be shown.

Here's a sample Acknowledgements section:

Acknowledgements
  • Article title generated with the help of ChatGPT
  • Article excerpt generated with the help of ChatGPT
  • Portions of this article's body generated with the help of ChatGPT
  • One or more code samples generated with the help of ChatGPT
  • Initial draft generated with the help of ChatGPT
  • Sample data generated with the help of ChatGPT

Note this is not (currently) a legal requirement, but I feel it's a moral one.

Veracity

The emergence of advanced natural language processors like ChatGPT makes it easy for novices to churn out content in large quantities.

The challenge for content creators, at least initially, will be to verify the accuracy of the generated content.  While much of it is high quality and factually correct, some of it is simply nonsense.  To the untrained eye, however, it can be hard to spot the difference between quality and nonsense in well-formed AI-generated content.

The ability to read AI-generated content, recognize its mistakes, and correct them, is what will separate the amateur content creators from the pros.

My pledge to you, dear reader, is that I will apply my own expertise and knowledge to all content that I publish on this site.  I fully intend to make use of ChatGPT (and future similar services) to reduce the tedium of generating content.  However, I will not abdicate my responsibility to publish accurate information to the best of my ability.

Remember, leaders can delegate authority, but not responsibility.

Accessibility

While I may occasionally include screenshots of ChatGPT output, screenshots of text are not a great user experience.

  • They hurt accessibility, especially for visually impaired readers
  • They don't support copying and pasting text
  • They don't resize well, especially on mobile devices

Instead, I will highlight my questions in bold and prefix them with "[MIKE]: ".  I will prefix the responses with "[ChatGPT]: ".  Here's an example:

[MIKE]: What is Microsoft Access?

[ChatGPT]: Microsoft Access is a database management system (DBMS) that is part of the Microsoft Office suite of productivity software. It is used to store, organize, and manage data, and is particularly well-suited for managing large amounts of structured data (data that is organized in a specific way and follows a predetermined set of rules).

Access allows users to create and manipulate data in the form of tables, queries, forms, and reports. It also includes tools for importing and exporting data to and from other databases and for creating relationships between different data elements.

Access is often used by small to medium-sized businesses, as well as by individuals and organizations that need to manage large amounts of data and generate reports from that data. It is a powerful and flexible tool that can be used for a wide range of data management tasks, and is particularly useful for creating custom databases and applications.
