Throwback Thursday: October 29, 2026

With over a million words scattered across more than 1,800 articles on this blog, you've probably missed a few things here.

That’s why each week in "Throwback Thursday," we’ll revisit some standout posts. Expect a blend of my personal favorites, insightful articles from other great minds, and a touch of coding humor to keep things light.

Highlights from NoLongerSet.com

Used properly, AI is the greatest force-multiplying technology the world has ever seen.

The Jevons Paradox: Why AI Is Good News for Access Developers
Who needs software developers when we have AI? More businesses than ever before, I predict.

Wisdom from Around the Web

Karl Donaubuaer–godfather of the Access community, and someone who's opinion and views I highly respect–takes a much more skeptical view of AI than I do.

I have no idea what Karl's political views are (nor do I have any interest in exploring such things on this blog), but on this particular topic, he fits William F. Buckley's famous definition of a conservative:

“A conservative is someone who stands athwart history, yelling Stop, at a time when no one is inclined to do so, or to have much patience with those who so urge it.”
The first AI Add-In for Access
AI here, there, anywhere. A third-party vendor offers the first comprehensive AI integration tool for Access.
Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter - Future of Life Institute
We call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.

One thing I think we both agree on is that AI is a runaway train.

Whether it proves safer to be on board than off may come down to how spectacular the inevitable derailment is.

Developer Humor

Six panels, Ace and Seth side by side on a plain floor line. Panel 1: Ace says 'AI won't replace Access developers.' Panel 2: Ace: 'It's the Jevons paradox. Cheaper software means more demand for software.' Panel 3: Ace: 'Every department will want an app. And who turns business needs into software?' Panel 4: Seth: 'Access developers?' Ace, grinning: 'Access developers!' Panel 5: a silent beat; Seth looks at Ace. Panel 6: Seth, serene: 'Or the departments. Now that they can just ask the AI.' Ace looks shocked.
